A poet whose work I enjoy is Charles Bernstein (editor at the electronic poetry center, a vast and wonderful site to visit and browse)-- and one of my neighbors recently surprised me with a link to a new-to-me Bernstein poem, "Thank You for Saying Thank You," that he had found (audio at Poets.org). Below I offer an excerpt -- and a link to the text of the complete poem. And, because I first misunderstood and thought that my neighbor had heard the poem on NPR, I went to NPR.org and found this wonderful treasury of poems and commentary.

Math-poetry connects with Carol Burnett
When I began teaching mathematics my students compared me -- to my delight -- with Carol Burnett. Recent thoughts of this amazing comedian have led me to Kevin Spacey's poem, "Carol" that he composed and read (imitating poet and actor Jimmy Stewart) to honor Burnett. I share with Jimmy Stewart the hometown of Indiana, PA and I reconnected with memories of Carol Burnett this past weekend via NPR's "Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me." Here is the text of Spacey's 14-line poem:
Carol Burnett is a wonderful gal
She always makes me laugh somehow

From a math-friend and an Ohio poet
One of the wonderful things about writing a blog about my paired passions of poetry and mathematics is that the blog connects me with fascinating and generous people whom I might not otherwise meet. One of these is Marylander Greg Coxson -- physicist, engineer, mathematician, Operations Researcher -- who took three years of Latin in high school and loves words. With interests in art and poetry, Greg has organized exhibits of math-related art -- and is a regular recommender of mathy poems for this blog.
A week or so ago Greg alerted me to an NPR interview with Ohio Poet Laureate Amit Majmudar (a radiologist as well as a poet) -- letting me know that Majmudar's poetry was rich with mathematical imagery. Following Greg's lead, I found Majmudar's website and was able to contact both Majmudar and his publisher, Knopf, for permission to offer these mathematical poems.
Here, from Amit Majmudar's new book Dothead, are two sections of the poem "Logomachia" -- sections alive with geometry and logic. The first, "radiology," is visually vivid; the second, "the waltz of descartes and mohammed," is a sestina that plays with the logic of word-order.

That's so random! (NPR, OEDILF, etc.)
One of the challenges I face in friendly conversations is not to overreact to a "misuse" of the word random. When I hear someone use that word to describe events that are peculiar or haphazard my heart-rate rises in protest. It is as if I am in math class where every term has one, quantifiable definition -- my use of random describes a situation when a variety of things may happen and all of them are equally likely. Like when a fair coin is tossed, or a die. Or when a lottery ticket is selected.
Recently my attitude was aired nationally. Sort of. On Friday, November 30, NPR's Evening Edition featured a discussion of random. Written by commentator Neda Ulaby, "That's So Random: The Evolution of an Odd Word" mentions the 1995 film "Clueless," a comedian (Spencer Thompson), the Hacker's Dictionary -- and also includes comments from the Oxford English Dictionary's editor, Jesse Sheidlower. I am rethinking my stubborn position.

Summing thin slices
This poem by recent (2008-2010) poet laureate Kay Ryan at first made me think of calculus, of integration, summing all the thin slices to find the area under a curve. And then the poem moved me on.

A poetic perspective on algebra
Last Monday (April 4), the Washington Post had an article concerning the value of Algebra II as a predictor of college and work success. Since then I have heard numerous successful people point out that they did not have the cited course. Also on April 4, NPR had a feature on the advantages of being bilingual. My own mind joined these two stories -- for me, algebra is a second language and has enabled my learning of lots of other things.

Are all mathematicians equal?
My first posting for this blog (on March 23, 2010) featured one of my earliest poems, a tribute to mathematician Emmy Noether (1882 -1935) entitled "My Dance Is Mathematics." Even as it praised Noether's achievements, the poem protested the secondary status of math-women, not only in Noether's day but also today. It ends with the stanza :
