Recently I discovered the website teacher planet and found there a variety of math-related resources including humorous versions of definitions of math terms.
Using a poetry-stanza format, I have included several of these "poetic" definitions below:
Math is like love;
a simple idea,
but it can get complicated.
A tragedy of mathematics
is a beautiful conjecture
ruined by an ugly fact.
Old mathematicians never die;
they just lose some of their function.
I do not think --
therefore I am not.
This modification of the words of Rene Descartes is illustrated by the following tale: one evening Rene Descartes went to relax at a local tavern, The tender approached and said, "Ah, good evening Monsieur Descartes! Shall I bring you the usual drink?" Descartes replied, "I think not" and promptly vanished.
Thank you, teacher planet, for these smile-provoking, thought-provoking words.
